Grande Saline lies on the southern side of Saint-Barthélemy, roughly fifteen minutes by car from Gustavia and a comparable distance from Gustave III Airport. The neighborhood takes its name from salt marshes developed in 1820, when engineers built dikes and channels to direct seawater into crystallization basins. Salt production continued — with several interruptions — until 1971, when refrigeration made the industry redundant. Today those pink-tinged ponds form a quiet bird sanctuary, in striking contrast to the beach that borders them. Anse de Grande Saline is the island's second-largest beach, after Flamands, and one of the few entirely free of construction.
