Between Sweden and the Tropics
Saint-Barthélemy has a unique historical heritage. Discovered by Christopher Columbus, the island was ceded to Sweden in 1784 in exchange for warehouse rights in Gothenburg.
This Swedish period left an indelible mark, particularly in the name of the capital, Gustavia, and in the architecture of certain public buildings with stone foundations.
Returned to France in 1878, the island has preserved its traditions while opening up to the world.
